Portfolio notes · Hanzi Ink
This red calligraphy example takes a lighter visual direction than the bold black pieces in the portfolio. A narrow vertical arrangement, slender loops, and open surrounding skin make the lettering feel fluid and restrained.

What makes this example feel different?
The composition relies on a thin, continuous-looking path rather than broad dark masses. Small changes in direction and line weight provide its rhythm. The surrounding open space is a major part of the effect: adding extra symbols or filling the gaps would create a different balance.
Red is the main color in this photograph. Here it acts as a visual choice; color alone is not enough to establish a tattoo's intended meaning or the wearer's personal story.
Cursive style still needs a clear reading
Expressive calligraphy can join, simplify, or reshape the appearance of strokes. A viewer unfamiliar with the style may not be able to identify the characters from a photograph alone. That is a reason to request a careful reading, not to invent a translation from the overall silhouette.
For your own design, keep a clear written version of the intended characters alongside the artistic version. Review the whole expression, not only isolated shapes that look attractive.
Planning a lighter composition
Use this example to discuss line weight, vertical flow, and the amount of space around the lettering. The tattoo artist should assess the proposed dimensions and how the artwork can be translated into a tattoo at that placement.
The photograph is not evidence of long-term color retention or healed line quality. We do not use it to promise a particular healing result, and a reference image should not replace the applying artist's assessment.
Can I submit a photo if I cannot type the characters?
Yes. The Free Chinese Character Check accepts a reference image. Send the clearest version you have and explain what you would like to know. Include any intended meaning or known context; do not rely on a social-media caption as proof of the wording.
A character check and a custom calligraphy design are different steps. Start by understanding the expression, then decide whether you want a new composition developed around your own words and placement.
Start with the meaning. Then find your style.

Hanzi Ink provides digital calligraphy design files. Tattoo application is carried out by the tattoo artist you choose. These notes discuss the visible artwork; they do not claim a client's personal story or a healed result.
